What others say
We find it hard sometimes to describe what is particular about SALT. This is what participants, past and present, say about SALT ...
“SALT is a place where I was able to share all of me and, in doing so, discover more of me. With a combination of time and space to think, reflect and articulate, SALT offered me the room to exercise my thoughts and find encouragement, support and inspiration to have that mental workout. In an otherwise hectic and, at times unforgiving world, I strongly recommend SALT to those with busy schedules and a desire for increased mental fitness. Taste SALT for yourself, the rewards are beyond measure.”
R Neil – Civil Service
"The group began at an important time within my career progression and provided me with the opportunity to reflect upon a number of pertinent issues which were affecting
my professional and personal life at the time. The small group of managers who met together were drawn from a number of different settings within the public and private sector. Each member of the group brought their own experiences to the group and with the assistance of two very capable facilitators; the group members were able to explore issues and undertake exercises both individually and corporately to enable progress within their management competences. Each session was different and the agenda was drawn up in relation to the needs of the group on each occasion. At the final session it was clear that everybody had learnt a great deal about management techniques and had been able to relate their own needs to this and learn accordingly thereby improving their practice."P Greene – Adult Protection Manager, London Borough of Hillingdon
"Being in the SALT group has helped me in so many ways. In fact, it is difficult to imagine anything that could be more supportive and inspiring.
I joined at a particularly vulnerable time: a broken relationship, redundancy and successive family bereavements. SALT is indefinable. Not ‘therapy’ and not ‘management workshop’ but vitally having something of the characteristics of both, without being too intrusive or too superficial. What makes SALT so special is that the meetings are non-judgmental but honest, frank but confidential, proactive but not pressured. In my case, it gives me the opportunity to discuss the nature of ‘work’, and what is best for me at this stage in my life and career. I can also explore the potential of the new opportunities that have opened up in a positive, dynamic and caring environment."
C Manton – Independent Consultant, Lecturer
"SALT is what I think of as a third space. It is not work or study, nor is it family or social, but a third space, with all the freedom that this implies, a sort of meta-space if you want. My story is that at a time when there was no room left in my head to think, certainly not in the two spaces/ rooms I usually used, it gave me this empty room and brought a kind of relief.
The other thing I would want to emphasise is the strange quality of the experience, an enjoyable strangeness, like a never before seen land. When you first arrive you’ll realise you’ve never been in a space like it, but once you get over the newness you won’t be able to contain your curiosity for the discovery."

"My 6 months with SALT taught me a lot about the power of transformation. I joined the group looking for someone to give me answers and with a very fixed idea of what I was there to achieve, which at the time was to quit my current job and move onto something else...quickly! I had a sense of urgency and impatience that I learnt was actually a hindrance to my happiness. I surrendered to the organic process and open space that SALT provided and came away with a more patient and loving attitude towards my self and my life. I did take on another job in the field I wanted to break into, whilst remaining with my current employer and transforming my role. I also made a decision to start a 2 year course I had been putting off (because I thought it would take too long!). SALT is a place where I really learnt that if you focus too much on results you lose the beauty of the journey and where your heart might lead you."
C Smith - Amnesty International
"I joined the SALT group about a year ago and it has transformed me enormously. From being uncertain “who am I”, underestimating myself, undermining my skills, my ability and the quality of my work I decided to change my life. I moved my career from full time to part time within the same department and set up a business.
My colleague and manager highly recommended me to get involved with SALT, explaining the benefits of developing confidence, learning how to manage work load and exploring tasks that I have concerns with. SALT helped me not only to discover my inner self but other qualities and skills that I never thought I possessed."
